Guideline 3.1.2: what a subscription screen has to disclose

A subscription screen has to state what the user is buying and what will happen: the price, the period, that it renews automatically, and how to cancel. It also has to link to your terms of use and your privacy policy from the screen itself, not from somewhere else in the app.

Why it matters

Guideline 3.1.2 is specific about the links: auto-renewable subscription screens have to link to a terms of use (EULA) and a privacy policy. Having both somewhere in settings is not the same as having them where the purchase decision is made.

Introductory offers need explicit copy. A free trial has to say what happens when it ends, how long it lasts and what the price becomes, in language that does not require the user to work it out.

A management entry point matters because cancellation is a frequent support burden and Apple treats an app that makes it hard as a problem. Linking out to the subscriptions page in Settings is the ordinary way to provide it.

How to fix it

  1. Put the price, the billing period and the automatic renewal in the purchase screen copy, not only in App Store Connect metadata.
  2. Add links to your terms of use and privacy policy on the subscription screen itself, and check both resolve publicly.
  3. If you offer an introductory price or trial, state its length, what it costs and what it becomes.
  4. Add a way to manage or cancel the subscription from inside the app.
